Serological and Molecular Techniques in Lyme Disease Diagnostic Testing
Lyme disease, caused by Borrelia burgdorferi, requires a multi-tiered diagnostic approach because the bacteria can be difficult to isolate from blood.
The Two-Tiered Testing Protocol
ELISA/EIA: A first-line screen to detect antibodies. If negative, no further testing is usually required.
Western Blot: Used to confirm positive or equivocal ELISA results by identifying specific proteins (bands) associated with the bacteria.
